What to Expect at a Military Family Retreat at Shepherd’s Pasture

Coming home is often the hardest part of military service. Many service members and veterans return to find that they feel alone—as though they are the only ones carrying anger, depression or confusion after deployment. Their spouses and children carry the weight too. That is why United We Serve builds every retreat around the whole family, not just the service member.

A retreat tailored to the people who attend

United We Serve has served hundreds of military service members and their families through Veteran and Military Retreats at Shepherd’s Pasture, the UWS Retreat Center. Each retreat is tailored to the specific needs of the participants, offering hope, tools and relationships to combat the struggles of military life.

Because no two families have the same story, there is no one-size-fits-all schedule. A group of recently returned service members may need something very different from couples rebuilding communication after years of deployments.

Rest in the East Texas piney woods

Shepherd’s Pasture is a Christian retreat and conference center set on 24 beautiful acres of whispering piney woods, streams, trails and pasture land in East Texas—about 30 miles from Marshall, 35 miles from Texarkana and 45 miles from Shreveport, Louisiana.

Service members and veterans have an opportunity to enjoy relaxation and a break from the confusing world they have left behind, and the one they have now come home to. It is a quiet, comfortable place of rest, healing and teaching.

Programs for PTSD, TBI and reintegration

Our retreats include programs focused on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI) and other service-related reintegration issues. These programs are designed to support the recuperation of the entire family, bringing hope, love and support to families who have felt the harsh realities of military life.

  • Rest and relaxation — time away from daily pressures to breathe and reconnect.
  • Focused programs — practical help for PTSD, TBI and family reintegration.
  • Shared experience — connection with others who understand.

You are not the only one

Few people understand or share the experiences service members have had. But there are others, just like you, who are struggling with the same pain and confusion—others who know the experiences, understand the difficulties, and seek to come together for loving support and a chance of moving forward.

“Great environment to relax and focus on what’s important.” — Josh L., Veteran

United We Serve helps service members and veterans connect to what they often need most: someone else who shares their experiences and understands.
